These cranes are often powered by diesel generators and can benefit significantly from energy storage via supercapacitors (supercaps). Combined with a bidirectional DC\/DC converter, braking energy is utilized much more efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When lowering containers, the hoist motor acts as a generator: braking energy is released that is normally dissipated through resistance. By temporarily storing this energy in supercapacitor banks, it can be reused later when lifting containers. It regulates the energy flow between the supercaps and the drive electronics, supporting voltages up to 900 VDC. The converter is robust and suitable for the high power peaks common in RTG applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Field data shows that such a system can achieve energy savings of up to 40\u201350% on hoisting movements, with fuel savings of up to 20%.
